“Whales are sentient beings with complex social structures and cultural traditions. They deserve our respect and protection.”
– Mere Takoko, Chief Executive of the Pacific Whale Fund.
Who We Are
The Pacific Whale Fund
We champion the recognition of whales as sentient beings with inherent rights. We advocate for their legal personhood and protection, working alongside governments and Indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) to establish dynamic management systems for marine areas, including Marine Protected Areas and customary marine areas. Our mission is to restore the health of the ocean, ensuring a thriving future for whales and all who depend on them.

Our Initiatives
Creating Waves of Change
Whale Legal Personhood
Granting Rights to Whales
Our project advocates for recognising whales as legal persons, granting them the rights and protections they deserve. By challenging traditional legal frameworks, we aim to establish a new paradigm that respects the intelligence and importance of these majestic marine creatures.
Moana Nui Pacific Whale Sanctuary
Protecting Ocean Biodiversity
We are establishing a vast marine sanctuary to safeguard whale habitats, promote biodiversity conservation, and ensure the sustainable future of marine life. This initiative aims to create a safe haven for whales and other marine species in the Pacific region.
